This might sound crazy but believe it or not, did you know there’s actually good mold out there? Yup, that fuzzy blue-green stuff that grows in warm, damp spots isn’t always a bad thing.

Mold can be normal –like when it grows on old bread– but when it’s growing in your home (hello, basements!) it’s not a good thing. At C&C Unlimited, we’re professional mold remediation specialists which means we’ve seen our fair share of mold around the Albany, NY area. Let’s take a quick look at whether you might have good mold, bad mold or normal mold.

WHAT IS GOOD MOLD?

Like we said, not all mold is bad mold. If you love blue cheese, then you love eating mold! Same for your favorite salami and dry-aged beef. Mold also makes wine and is a crucial component of some medicines. Basically, there are plenty of molds outside the home that actually make life better! And we typically don’t notice them until we’re reaching for that Roquefort 😉

WHAT IS NORMAL MOLD?

Okay, so after good mold we also have what we consider to be normal mold. Inside the home, there are two types of normal mold: airborne and surface.

Whether we like it or not, there will always be some level of airborne mold spores in our space because they get through any gap (open doors, windows, leaky seals) they can.

Then there’s mildew— this is the type of mold that grows only on the surface, is harmless to your health and can be easily removed with household cleaning products. Think of soap scum in your shower or tub and now you know what normal mold is.

WHAT IS BAD MOLD?

Unfortunately, not all mold is good or normal. Which brings us to bad mold.

Mold is considered a bad thing when it’s growing on drywall, wood framing, sub flooring, ceilings, furniture, etc.

This kind of mold burrows beneath the surface, causes serious long-term health issues if left unchecked and needs to be professionally removed.
